Nyomi’s view of “Good Readers” based on Nabokov literature
Nabokov believes that a good reader is one who is able to fully comprehend the story, the teaching, and the enchantment of a piece of literature. He stated that in order for a good reader to understand a piece of literature he or she must learn to notice details. He made the point that a good reader will re-read the story several times in order to notice the details, so that they can better understand the writing. Understanding the story allows the good reader to feel what the author felt while they were writing. According to Nabokov a good reader is able to read with a pleasure that is both sensual and intellectual. In order to do so they must have imagination, memory, a dictionary and some artistic sense.
Personally, I agree with his definition of a good reader. I found it hard to disagree with the examples he gave in order to demonstrate the truth of his statements. I believe that a good reader should pay attention to details. I believe that, like Nabokov wrote, if they do not pay attention to details they will have a misconception of the entire piece of literature. I also believe that the readers play a major part in a piece of writing. If no one reads a story or a piece of literature what is the point of it being written? This link has a few quotes that explain the importance of good readers, http://thinkexist.com/quotes/with/keyword/reader/. I believe that because we play such and important role in the advancement of and authors writing we should learn to enjoy as much literature as possible. At times it can be tedious to read certain types of literature yet I believe that all types are important to read, and a good reader will be able to train their mind to enjoy and learn from them all. I do not consider myself to have reached that point but, I hope I will soon enough. However, I know that I have some qualities of a good reader I re-examine literature a number of times in order to better understand and enjoy it, I have an imagination, and some artistic sense. Nevertheless, everyone is not perfect, we all have some things we need to work on, and I intend to do so in my weak areas of reading.
I like your what you say about if no one will read something, then whats the point of it being written. For the most part I agree with that, but what about private journals, or people that write just to express ,or clarify their feelings, those writings have a purpose of self analyst and promotion.
ReplyDeleteI do strongly agree with you about how we need to read various types of literature in order to be good readers.
I agree with you on all points of what you to be a good reader. It's seems pretty obvious on a good reader needing to be a scholar to at least understand what has been written, but a good reader being one that re-reads is something that people don't think about. I think, like you, that re-reading, having an imagination, and artistic sense are all vital points of a good reader :)
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed your views on this article. I agree with what you wrote that when you understand the story it allows the reader to feel what the author was feeling when writing. I appreciate writers time and creativity, it is difficult to be able to get their feelings, point of views and thoughts across to the reader. And for a reader it takes skills to be able to "read with pleasure that is both sensual and intellectual" as you stated.
ReplyDeleteYou know your projects stand out of the herd. There is something special about them. It seems to me all of them are really brilliant!
